Alaska Immigration Attorney answers the 6 most important questions about Immigration lawyers

I need an immigration attorney. Who should I hire?

Always hire an attorney who is qualified and can make you feel comfortable in discussing your situation. Always hire an attorney who fully and fairly discloses in writing how much your case will cost.

How do I know if an attorney is qualified as an immigration attorney?

  1.  If you have an immigration issue, always hire an attorney who is a member of the American Immigration Lawyer Association.
  2. It is always a good idea to ask your friends for a recommendation.
  3. It is always a good idea to  retain an attorney who you can meet face-to-face. While there may be many good attorneys who offer their services over the internet, they may not be familiar with situations that are unique to Alaska.
  4. Is the attorney a member of the Alaska Bar Association? The primary job of the Alaska Bar Association is to protect Alaskans from dishonest or unethical lawyers. This is an important protection. If you hire an internet lawyer this important protection might not be available. Always ask how long the attorney has been a lawyer in Alaska. Experience is important.

Should I visit the lawyer’s office?

It is always a good idea to visit the attorney’s office.  Is the attorney’s staff knowledgeable?  Polite?  Do you feel comfortable?

What about payment?

It is customary for the client to pay for services and governmental fees at the beginning of the case. This is because most of the work is done shortly after the initial interview when you hire the lawyer. Government filing fees can be expensive and must be paid when the case is filed. Always hire an attorney who fully and fairly discloses in writing how much your case will cost.

Alaska Immigration Law Center offers payment plans for those clients who qualify. We are always prepared to discuss payment options when necessary.

Can You Do it Yourself?

Some of our clients have tried to resolve their immigration issues directly with USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services). However, it is easy to make mistakes that end up costing precious time, and those delays may be much more expensive than professional immigration legal services. Our immigration clients find that it is worthwhile to ensure that family-based visas and employment-based visas are done correctly the first time, to maximize the chances of a successful outcome as quickly as possible.
