Do most people that get an interview get a green card?
If you get an appointment for a green card interview with an Immigration Services Officer, this does not confirm whether or not your application for a green card will be successful.
Getting this appointment does, however, let you know that your green card application process is almost complete.
Being asked to interview with USCIS means you have successfully passed some immigration tests, and this interview will be your last one.
*It is normal for USCIS to require an interview as part of the green card application process.
If your interview goes well, you will receive your green card and become a lawful permanent resident of the United States.
Reasons an interview may be required:
A green card interview is one way the US government verifies your eligibility for a green card. (permanent resident status)
Some examples of situations where Immigration services will require an interview include:
- when they need to confirm your identity
- if they need to validate your immigration status because you entered the US without inspection, or because there are other unresolved issues regarding your entrance to the US
- If there are any concerns about national security or criminal inadmissibility
- if your fingerprints have been rejected from the biometrics appointment
- if USCIS suspects fraud
- if you answered “yes” to any of the security questions on I-485
Reasons an interview may not be required:
If your case is simple, well-documented, and you meet all the eligibility guidelines, USCIS may determine that an interview is unnecessary.
Some examples of situations where an interview may not be required include:
- if you are under 21 years of age and are the unmarried child of a US citizen
- if you are the parent of a US citizen
- if you are under age 14 and are the the unmarried child of a lawful permanent resident
Additionally, if it’s clear from your paperwork that you are not eligible to receive a green card, USCIS will reject your application without conducting an interview.
